CHRISTCHURCH: AirAsia X has pledged to raise RM500,000 to help fund earthquake restoration works in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Its chief executive officer Azran Osman-Rani said a percentage of each ticket purchased by every passenger travelling to and from New Zealand would be donated towards the fund.
"We've set a target of raising RM500,000 (NZ$220,000) and expect to reach it within 12 months.
"It made sense to contribute to preserving some of the things that almost every traveller to the South Island takes a photo of.
"The image presented by the Arts Centre, the Cathedral and other beautiful historic buildings is not only central to the city's tourism image, when fully restored, they will become an enduring reminder of the community's remarkable resilience."
Strengthening and reconstruction works to Christchurch's Anglican Cathedral alone is estimated to cost tens of millions of dollars.
The announcement was made in conjunction with a ceremony held at the Westfield Mall here yesterday to celebrate AirAsia X's maiden flight from Kuala Lumpur to Christchurch.
AirAsia X which is an affiliate of AirAsia, is now offering a promotional all-in economy fare from as low as RM499 one way and all-in premium fare from as low as RM1,799 one way from Kuala Lumpur to Christchurch for the booking period from April 1 to 5 for the travel period from Nov 11 to Feb 29, 2012.
