ETS chief operating officer Azizullah Kinayatullah said they received a call from Istana Kinta on Friday informing them that the sultan wanted to try out the new service.
The royal couple got into the normal coach.
They left Kuala Lumpur at 2.17pm and reached Ipoh at 4.23pm.
Perak mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria and his wife, Puan Sri Ainon Abdul Ghani, also travelled in the same coach.
"I made the arrangement much earlier to return to Ipoh on the ETS after attending my nephew's wedding reception in Kuala Lumpur.
"However, I did not know the sultan would board the train too.
"We bought the tickets on Saturday while an official from the palace told us that we would be travelling with the sultan.
"Travelling on the ETS is comfortable and it was a smooth journey," Harussani said.
Azizullah said Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd did not have special, or royal coaches yet.
Each coach had two washrooms, including one for disabled travellers, he added.
The RM30 fare for the one-way journey would remain until Chinese New Year and any changes would be announced later.
